The Junior Staff Program is a long-standing initiative aimed at empowering young people by involving them directly in the operation and future development of a community project. Through a series of structured activities, participants will gain practical experience and a sense of ownership that supports both personal growth and mental wellbeing.
Key activities include learning emergency first aid, designing and producing a junior staff uniform, and receiving training to assist in running the project. These steps are designed to build confidence, foster responsibility, and help young people feel valued and recognised within the community.
By engaging in this programme, participants will not only develop essential life skills but also contribute meaningfully to a project that may one day be led by them. The initiative encourages young people to see themselves as future workers, managers, and volunteers, and aims to create a lasting impact by nurturing leadership, resilience, and a strong sense of purpose.

YMCA East Surrey are working with students at Oxted School and Wallington School who are having difficulties in attending school due to emotional reasons. The 8–10-week sessions are carried out with students to understand the challenges young people are experiencing and providing them with the tools to help manage them.
Some sessions include parents, carers, and teachers to build a shared understanding of the young person’s strengths and support their return to education. This is a timely intervention that promotes self-help for young people and their families, while also supporting the wider workforce involved in their care and education.
